What Are the Best Nintendo Consoles?

Nintendo is a company that constantly puts out great video game consoles. From the original Nintendo Entertainment System to the N64 to the Nintendo Switch, every console holds a special place in someone’s heart.

Which Nintendo consoles are the best of the best? We’ve tried to answer this by covering the top Nintendo systems by sales.

Read on if you’re curious as to where your favorite console stands.

GameCube

Originally released in Japan in 2001, the GameCube has amassed over 21 million units sold. The GameCube features a fun and compact design, making it easy to bring to friends’ houses. Popular GameCube games include Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Nintendo 64

Next on our list of top Nintendo systems is the N64, which was released right before the GameCube. Featuring a now-iconic controller and 64-bit processor, the N64 was ahead of its time. Nintendo has sold over 32 million N64 consoles around the world, and popular games for the system include Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

One of Nintendo’s most popular early systems, the Nintendo Entertainment System was the second console the company ever released. A big reason it’s considered one of the best Nintendo consoles is because the NES introduced iconic characters like Mario, Link and Samus Aran. Over 61 million NES consoles have been sold across the world.

Nintendo Switch

The most recent addition to Nintendo’s console collection, the Switch allows for both handheld and television-connected playing. The system was first released in 2017 and has sold around 85 million units. Popular games for the Nintendo Switch include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Nintendo Wii

Released in 2006, the Nintendo Wii was one of the first of its kind. This system featured motion-controlled games, and you could connect it to the internet. Nintendo has sold around 101 million Wiis. Popular games for the system include Just Dance and Wii Sports.

Game Boy

Everyone remembers their first Game Boy. This iconic handheld video game console was first released in 1989 and featured an 8-bit processor. An updated version of the Game Boy, called the Game Boy Color, was released in 1998. Altogether, Nintendo sold 118 million units of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. This was thanks, in part, to the popularity of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

Nintendo DS

We’re now at the end of our list of the top Nintendo systems, and number one is the Nintendo DS. Not only is the DS Nintendo’s most sold console, but it’s also the best-selling handheld console of all time. Nintendo has sold over 154 million DS units. Popular games for the Nintendo DS include Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and New Super Mario Bros.
